Rick Pitino, 56, has admitted to police that he had sex with Karen Cunagin – a divorced mother with four children – on a restaurant table the night they met in 2003.
Karen Sypher, 49, was indicted in May on charges of lying to the FBI and attempting to extort up to $10 million from coach Pitino.
In police documents which became public last week, Pitino told detectives he gave Sypher $3,000 after she said she was pregnant and was getting an abortion, but didn’t have health insurance.
Louisville Metro Police records show that the commander of the sex offense unit, Sgt. Andy Abbott, who investigated Sypher’s claims and interviewed her twice in July, found problems in her accounts of both incidents — which he said raised questions about her credibility.
Sgt. Andy Abbott said in an investigative summary that Sypher failed, for example, to disclose that another person was at Porcini Restaurant when she said the first incident occurred.
That witness, Vinny Tatum, an executive assistant to Pitino, told the FBI that he didn’t see what happened but heard “only the sounds of two people that seemed to be enjoying themselves during a sexual encounter,” according to Abbott’s report.
Abbott said records also indicate that Pitino was in California when Sypher claimed he sexually assaulted her a second time.
“The more information I gather, the worse it looks for you,” Abbott told Sypher during a July 13 phone interview, according to a transcript of the call.
Karen Sypher is in the process of divorcing Tim Sypher – with whom she has a 4-year old daughter – and is asking for $4,800 a month in alimony, which is essentailly equivalent to his net take home pay from his $77,000 salary as Louisville’s basketball equipment manager.
Karen also said her children must have posted her profile on SugarDaddie.com to ger her dating again.
In 2001, Sypher, then known as Karen Wise, filed a $200,000 sexual harassment lawsuit against her then employer, a local car repair shop owner, alleging emotional pain and suffering, to which the shop owner replied that all contact was consensual.
