Disney Snaps Up Marvel – The Walt Disney company snaps up legendary Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion in cash and stock, adding all 5,000 Marvel characters to the Mickey Mouse franchise.

Disney buys Marvel

The Disney buys Marvel deal is part of Disney’s attempt to expand its appeal to young males, as most of its entertainment skews heavily toward a younger female demographic.

Marvel characters, which appeal hevily to young males, have appeared in some of the biggest blockbuster movies of the last decade, including Spiderman, X-Men, and Iron Man.

“It helps Disney add exposure to a young male demographic it had sort of lost some balance with,” entertainment analyst David Joyce said, noting the $4 billion offer was at “full price.”

Disney is paying Marvel shareholders $30 per share in cash, plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share they own. That values each Marvel share at $50 based on Friday’s closing stock prices.

Disney’s CEO Robert Iger hailed the Marvel acquisition, saying it combines Marvel’s “strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters” with Disney’s “unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties” and ability to maximize value across multiple platforms and territories.
