Man Kills Girlfriend Over Facebook – A Welsh man stabbed and then strangled his girlfriend to death because she changed her Facebook status to “single” and was spending too much time online.
Brian Lewis, 31, denies strangling his partner Hayley Jones to death at the home they shared with their four children in Phillipstown, New Tredegar, south Wales.
The youngsters found their mother’s lifeless body in the living room after Lewis fled the scene during the early hours of March 12, Cardiff Crown Court was told.
An autopsy showed Ms Jones received a stab injury to her chest from a knife blade that had penetrated the two sleeping bags and three layers of clothing covering her as she tried to sleep on the living room sofa.
The jury heard the man told police in interview that he had the knife in his hands at the time of getting into a scuffle with his girlfriend because he was trimming his fingernails.
Jurors heard that cracks began to appear in the couple’s relationship when Lewis lost his job and Ms Jones, 26, found work as a care assistant.
Prosecutor Mark Evans QC said: “Hayley had at the same time started to expand her social horizons.”
“She had began spending a lot of time on the internet site Facebook. Brian Lewis was to state in interview and to other people that she had been quite secretive about this.”
“For example, preventing him from accessing the site and switching the computer off to prevent him from seeing any of the content.”
“It is quite clear from the evidence, you will hear, this rankled with him.”
Mr Evans said their relationship broke down to such an extent that Mr Jones changed her Facebook status to “single” on March 2, just over a week before her death.
Lewis claimed in a police interview he had accepted the split – and the only “tension” was about the time she spent on the web.
Mr Evans said drinkers at the Phillipstown social club claimed the defendant said: “If I can’t have her, then no f***** else will because I will kill her first” just a few days before Ms Jones’s death.
The court heard from a transcript of when Lewis dialled 999 at 3.59am on March 12 stating that he had strangled his girlfriend.
He also told the operator that his children were asleep in their bedrooms, but the court heard they had come downstairs after their father left the house.
“They may have well tried to revive her or cover her body up,” said Mr Evans.
