Jailed Zombies Get $165k – Minneapolis paid $165k to settle a lawsuit filed by seven jailed zombies who claimed their civil rights were violated.

Police arrested seven friends dressed as zombies back in 2006, after noticing they were carrying bags with wires sticking out that apparently looked like a bomb.

It turned out to be sound equipment, and the group was never charged, but the zombies were nonetheless jailed for two days.

The city decided to settle a lawsuit filed by the group, and will pay them and their attorney $165,000.

The seven friends were walking the streets in traditional zombie style, with white face powder, fake blood, and dark eye makeup.

The jailed zombies were carrying sound equipment, which police called “simulated weapons of mass destruction”, to amplify their iPod music.

The group says it was protesting “mindless” consumerism and the belief that people purchase things “as a replacement for real interaction,” says one.

Police jailed them after finding out none were carrying any identification, which everyone knows zombies never do.

Apparently, it also took the police two days to figure out they were carrying sound equipment, not weapons of mass destruction.

Although U.S. District Judge Joan Ericksen had dismissed the zombies’ lawsuit, it was resurrected in February by a three-judge panel of the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which concluded that police lacked probable cause to arrest the seven, a decision which set the stage for a federal trial this fall.

The jailed zombie lawsuit settlement means there will be no trial.

“I feel great that the city is being held accountable for the actions of their police,” said Raphi Rechitsky, 27, a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at the University of Minnesota and one of the seven zombies, who told reporters that he and his friends were performing street theater when they were arrested.
