San Marcos Fire update – The Coronado Hills fire is spreading rapidly as seen in the pictures below with the Cal State San Marcos campus ordered evacuated.
High temperatures, bone dry conditions, and gusting Santa Ana winds contributed to the rapid spread of the San Marcos fire.

Officials said that 400 acres were burning in an area known as Coronado Hills, near Cal State San Marcos and San Elijo Hills. CalFire said several structures were threatened by the Coronado Hills fire.

A representative for the California Highway Patrol said at 3:30 a.m. that 700 students at the university were being evacuated. Evacuations were underway in the Coronado Hills and Discovery Hills areas, as well as portions of San Elijo Hills.
And that’s the latest news on the San Marcos fire.

La Costa
Carlsbad is on voluntary evac. Smoke is bad, but so far no fires reported. Closest fires are the Coronado Hills Fire, Cal State has been evacuated and folks in San Marcos and San Elijo Hills. the monster fire south and east of Carlsbad is the now combined Guajito/Witch Creek Fire east of San Diego. Mandatory evacs all the way to the coast, there.
Two auto calls have been sent to the Carlsbad area asking people to be ready to/or voluntarily evacuate. Lost of folks are sitting tight for now.

We’re in far SE Carlsbad at La Costa Oaks (near LCH and over the hill from San Elijo). We lost cable mid-morning, so radio was our only info source and almost nothing was being said about our area. Given the amount of open space around our area we started packing. For clarification, the cable may have been our problem from deconnecting the PCs, etc.
Around 1 the police drove through the neighborhood calling for a vol evac, then around 2 calling for a mand evac. In the am the air was dark to the south, but blue towards Carlsbad, but by 2 the air was full of ash and smoke and the blue skies were gone. We’ve evac’ed to relatives in OC. Now it seems the fire may skip that area, but as bad as the air was, we’re happy to have left with kids and pets.

I just looked at http://www.fire.ca.gov and it mentions that the San Marcos fire has been contained. Our worry is that we have a home in the Dicovery Hills area. Does anyone know where exactly houses were lost? We live off of Via Vera Cruz.
Thank you

I was wondering what area exactly did burn in the coronado hills area. I’m located in belleza on the other side of the hill from san elijo. My concern is did the fire hit around that area aready? since I heard it was going south west …. I’m also near burham dr too but closer to 78. my worry is about sleeping, if I should really worry during the mid morning

How close did the fire actually come to the Cal State, San Marcos and the 78? I know where San Elijo is – at the Santa Fe entrance – but I am unfamiliar with the other communities? Thanks for any info!

I’m on the eas side of cal state san marcos and no evacuations were ordered yesterday. CSUSM is over the hill from san elijo. at the moment nothing is being reported about anything near the 78 west of the 15. I’m just waiting since, right now at least on the maps I’m in the projected evacuation area. that all is very scary since I just moved in last summer.

I was wondering if there are any evacuations in San Marcos. I am here alone with my two daughters. We live off of woodward. Not too far from twin oaks golf course. Are we in danger?
