Palomar Mountain Fire Update – The Poomacha fire that started this morning on the La Jolla reservation and already burned 30,000 acres suddenly started up Mount Palomar toward the observatory.

The Palomar mountain fire threatens not only the famed observatory, but also an extensive array of telecommunications towers along it’s summit.
Loss of those towers would cripple cell phone service in the surrounding areas as well as seriously impact several television and radio stations.

Earlier today, it looked as if the fire would just skirt the flanks of Mount Palomar and continue west-northwest, but winds have swirled and shifted the blaze uphill. Multiple engine crews have been re-routed to Palomar Mountain to battle the fire.
The blaze, dubbed the Poomacha Fire, started near State Route 76 and Poomacha Road in Pauma Valley early this morning, according to Cal Fire. Eight firefighters have been injured already today fighting this blaze.
Reverse 9-1-1 calls were sent at noon today to issue evacuation orders to more than 900 Palomar Mountain and Valley Center residents. Residents were being advised to take shelter at the Palomar Observatory, but were later redirected to other shelters.
Poomacha Fire Update 9:00pm PST:
There have been 10 injuries to firefighers, 218 firefighters are assigned to this incident. Fifty homes have been destroyed. The fire increased in size substantially due to extreme fire behavior, lack of resources and high winds. No significant perimeter control has been initiated due to structure protection priorities.
