Camp Pendleton Fire – Update 10-24 at 6:00 am PST – Last official word from Camp Pendleton was that the Horno fire was 10% contained and had burned 3,000 acres.
Other updated sources place the Pendleton fire burn number at 6,000 acres. I-5 is closed in both directions in the Camp Pendleton area.
Because I-5 is closed between 76 and Christianitos, if you are trying to get to Oarnge County, take 78E to 15N to Temecula and head west.
Mandatory Fire Evacuations Ordered 10-24:
NEW: MANDATORY EVACUATIONS IN DELUZ
6:06 a.m. – Mandatory Evacuations have been issued for the Deluz area due to the Rice Fire burning near Fallbrook.
NEW: MANDATORY EVACUATIONS ISSUED NEAR PALOMAR MOUNTAIN
6:00 a.m – Mandatory Evacuations are in effect near Palomar Mountain in the North County. Approximately 167 households have been ordered out in Birch Hill. Officials say the Poomacha Fire, burning on the La Jolla Indian Reservation is now threatening that community.
NEW: TRAFFIC UPDATE – 5:13 a.m.
- I-5 is closed in both directions in the Camp Pendleton area.
- I-15 is open in both directions. I-15 offramps to West Bernardo Drive are CLOSED.
- Hwy 78 from Bear Valley Parkway to Hwy 79
- Hwy 76 eastbound
- Hwy 67 between Vigilante to Ramona
- Hwy 94 between Steele Canyon and Forest Gate
NEW: FALLBROOK EVACUATION UPDATE
5:00 a.m. – Fallbrook is under mandatory evacuation orders. According to the city’s Sheriff’s Department, the fires that started at Camp Pendleton have doubled back and are heading east toward the city.
Mandatory evacuations are issued for the Bonsall, San Luis Rey Heights and Winterwarm communities on the north side of SR 76. Residents are being asked to take State Route 76 heading west away from the fires.
Latest Camp Pendleton Fire Update:
Camp Pendleton has requested the closure of train service. Metrolink confirms trains are shut down from Oceanside to San Clemente. Coaster service in San Diego County has also been suspended.
Fire on nearby La Jolla Indian Reservation is still burning out of control, but diminishing winds today may aid firefighters. 19 military aircraft are slated to join the fire fighting effort Wednesday morning (today).

Camp Pendleton Update at 2:30pm PST October 24, 2007
Horno Fire, which currently covers approximately 10,000 acres, is 40-50 percent contained.
The Wilcox Fire is approximately 100 acres and is 100 percent contained.
The five-acre fire near the Commissary (the Base’s largest grocery store) in the 21 Area is also 100 percent contained.
The Horno Fire has two heads, one north toward San Onofre and one south toward Pulgas Rd. The southern head is currently the lesser threat.
Efforts focused on the northern head include helicopter support and reverse fire operations. The reverse fires are controlled, intentional burns designed to prevent the Horno Fire from spreading.

Camp Pendleton Fire Update at 3:00 pm PST October 24, 2007
Camp Pendleton fire officials have announced they are fighting a new fire in southeastern Camp Pendleton near the San Luis Rey Gate.
Residents of Serra Mesa Housing have been instructed to relocate to the 22 Area Parade Deck as a precautionary measure due to their proximity to the fire.
Military police are on the scene assisting in relocating military members and their families to a safe location on base. Air assets are being utilized to assist in fighting the fire.

Oceanside is just getting heavy smoke clouds because the Camp Pendleton fire is so much bigger today.
As of two hours ago Cal Fire was reporting that the
17,000 acre Horno fire is 50% contained…
