Martina Hingis Cocaine Scandal – Martina Hingis (pictured below) tested positive for cocaine during the Wimbledon tournament and has announced her retirement from competitive tennis.
Hingis, 27, denied using cocaine, saying in a statement that the substance may have been in a spiked fruit drink “that someone in my environment gave me viciously without my knowledge.”
“I am frustrated and angry,” Hingis said. “I believe that I am absolutely, 100 percent innocent.”
A statement released to the media by the 27-year-old Swiss tennis star insisted she found the accusations “so horrendous and monstrous I’ve decided to confront it head on by talking to the press.”
Martina Hingis cocaine use didn’t improve her game as the five-time Grand Slam champion and former Wimbledon winner lost in the third round at the All England Club to Laura Granville.
Her statement continued:
“My only performance enhancer is the love of the game. When I was informed I had failed my ‘A’ test following my defeat at Wimbledon I was shocked and appalled.”
“I have no desire to spend the next seven years fighting doping officials. I’m frustrated and angry because I believe I’m 100% innocent and accusations such as these don’t provide me with the motivation to continue.”
Hingis returned to the sport two years ago after a four-year absence because of injuries but acknowledges at 27 she is “too old to realistically play top-class tennis.” She was hampered this year by a nagging hip injury.
Known as the “Swiss Miss”, she has won five Grand Slam singles titles. She has also won nine Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, winning a calendar year Grand Slam in 1998, and one Grand Slam mixed doubles title.
She spent a total of 209 weeks as World No. 1 and set a series of “youngest-ever” records before ligament injuries in both ankles forced her to withdraw from professional tennis at the relatively early age of 22.
Before the Martian Hingis cocaine scandal erupted, she was spotted at Fashion Week in New York with Natasha Beddingfield in September.
