Peterson was placed on administrative leave October 25, when news of the teacher-student relationship surfaced. Police issued a felony warrant for her arrest on charges of child abuse, child endangerment, and kidnapping after the middle school teacher and her student lover took off.
Fernando Rodriguez, who lived at a home for at-risk boys in nearby Alliance, described Peterson in letters as his “Baby Gurl,” and claimed their relationship was “not just about the sex but that it was pretty good,” according to court documents.
Court documents also say Peterson’s school-issued laptop contained letters where she said she loved the student, as did letters provided to authorities by her father, Drew Peterson.
Kelsey Peterson had a child while still in high school, but that child - now in elementary school - does not live with her. Peterson was teaching sixth grade at the middle school she attended while growing up.
Police said Rodriguez contacted his family over the weekend and said Peterson and Rodriguez were in Grand Island, about 85 miles east of Lexington. Police also said the runaway lovers were spotted Friday night at a convenience store in Denver, then again Sunday in Ogallala, Nebraska near the northeastern tip of Colorado.
Fernando Rodriguez called his mother early Saturday and sent a text message to his brother, saying he was OK, police said. Police said he also called his aunt to ask whether a visa or passport was necessary to travel to Mexico with Peterson.Â

I went to hs with Kelsey though I was 3 years younger. She was popular, athletic, and ran with the cool crowd. She dated the star on the football team and became pregnant. Both were nice kids.. Kelsey was basically abandoned by her friends, family, teachers, coaches when she became pregnant. She didn’t let it bring her down tho. She graduated high school, went to college and graduated and became a teacher, all with a little child. Her dad is a HS basketball coach and teacher just 30 miles from where Kelsey lived. He apparently kicked her out of his house when she got pregnant in high school. She lived across the street from some of my relatives and I remember a very normal family in a small town. The father of her child is a friend of a relative of mine and he is now married to someone else. My sister had Kelsey as a coach 3 years ago. I can’t imagine what the families are going through.

It disappoints me tremendously when as teachers many of us bust our butts to honor our professional oath, our contracts and do the very best job we can every single day with the children we are blessed to teach, and then people like this young woman come along and make national headlines, creating more skepticism about our integrity and character as educators.

Arrested in Mexicali, Mexico:
Kelsey Peterson was arrested in Mexico and the 13-year-old boy she allegedly ran away with was turned over to his relatives, a prosecutor said Saturday.
Kelsey Peterson, a 25-year-old sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was arrested in Mexicali, a city on the border with California, Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said.
They were found and apprehended by Mexican authorities without incident Friday evening. Peterson was in FBI custody and transported back to the U.S. early Saturday, and the boy was released to relatives in Mexico, Waterman said.

You hear about some on the news…. but if you research it, there are dozens of cases that never made it to national news…. or at least not for any length of time…

Amazing double standard in this country. I went to High School with Phil Sutliff (see pasadenastarnews.com) who just got 12 years for relations with a 16 year old, and he did not even kidnap her. I’ll bet anything that Kelsey gets nowhere near that.

well ….since 13 year olds can be treated as adults and prosecuted as such, i would say that they should both be held responsible, he knew the difference between right and wrong, at least he should have if his parents had done their job and raised him right, so in this instance i think the parents are as much to blame…..but on another note he and those that knew he was in the USA illegally are criminals as well….. the minute they crossed the boarder with out a visa to do, so they broke the law….and those at the school and law enforcement that allow them to stay are as as bad as well. I feel she should be let go, since the boy is not a U.S citizen our laws should not protect him as such. these illegals are all criminals, there are way too many DO GOODERS IN THE STATES. and i for one am tired of my Taxes that i pay in, being spent for people that haven’t earned the right to be here legally.

Irregardless of where the kid came from the bottom line is this woman is a pedophile and deserves to be punished as such. Unfortunately, she will not be. If we want this type of behavior to end, then she must be tried and punished to the full extent of the law. This is not and should not become a racist issue. Excuse you! You are absolutely right; we weren’t the first ones to come into “my country”. I’m not racist, but if “they” are here illegally then they are “criminals”. I don’t care how hard you think someone works. Criminal is criminal. If you “Mexicans” work so much harder than “all of us” then why don’t you stay in Mexico and work. No Mexican, or any other nationality for that matter, can “work harder than me” at my job… I work for a company that will not employ them. As far as waiting for money from “my government”… the only money I’ve ever received from “my government” is while I was serving “my country” in “my military”. The real issue here is age, a 25 year old adult and a 13 year old child. That is statutory rape, in all 50 states in the union, regardless of religion, gender, or nationality. In Nebraska that is a first-degree sexual assault for a person age 19 or older to sexually penetrate a person under age 16, which carries 1 to 50 years in prison.

I have to ask some of the same questions. Why is the boy’s picture posted with the article? If it was a young girl, I can guarantee we would not see her picture here.
Secondly, the article says Peterson ‘ran away’ with this boy. Bull! She KIDNAPPED him. ‘Ran away’ has a quaint, almost romantic sound to it. There is nothing quaint or romantic about sexual abuse of an underage child.

Yes, they should both be punished. This behavior is wrong and has a lot of people doubting the Lex school systems. And why shouldn’t we? Fellow staff and family had been warning her for almost a year she would get into trouble for her actions. Why are they not on trial too, for aiding and abetting? Are we to home school our children so we don’t have to fear this happening to them.
I don’t care what a great student she was or what a great basketball player she was or what a deviant he was for that matter. She knew better than to sleep with a CHILD. Good Lord, he’s only five years older than her daughter. That’s sick!!! Apparently your childhood and upbringing has no affect whatsoever on your conduct as an adult - she’s not so great now. And her friends ditched herin high school because they were not her friends. They accepted her because she had the name.
She was only a year ahead of me - and no we never talked. Why? Because she thought she was better than everyone. And I’m glad - because look how she turned out. I have three kids now and I can’t imagine someone doing this to any of them. In fact, I pity the person that would try. Don’t get me wrong - this boy is at fault also. He knew better but I also blame the family - they knew and continued to let him “see” her. This is sick on the part of everyone involved and they all deserve what’s coming to them. I can only hope they get the book. Nobody deserves to have to worry about this when they send their ‘babies’ off to school everyday. I also hope he gets more than deported - he has classic signs of an uncontrollable child and while her end was so much worse, he shouldn’t get off scot-free.

From what I read, this is a really sad story Kelsey is not a bad person on the contrary she looks to me like a girl in a big necessity of affection which she found on this boy. Honestly I dont see this boy being harmed by the kind of relationship thay had, is so amazing that being already in the 21st century we are so afraid of sex, wether we like it or not estadistics show that boys and girls are having sex as young as ten and eleven years old even if we like it or not or consider it good or bad it is happening and we do not want to face it. At least three lives will be destroyed after this, (Kelsey her daughter and the boy involved) because of our fears. In the other hand immigration issue is very controversial but is also true that there are hard working and lazy americans as there are mexicans, but it is also true that if all of us american people didnt hire any illegal immigrants they wouldnt be here, its a double sided problem, and while we are hanging this poor girl, many americans are dying in Iraq and we do not care that is morally sick, our taxes are enough to pay health isurance to every boy and girl in the country but instead we use it on war that is real sickness not what this girl did.

I am totally disgusted with this boy and his family. It is becoming a trend that teachers are having sex with minors. Please don’t call this rape. This boy enjoyed it so much that he wanted more. I just read about the story this evening. Tragic and definitely a blip in judgement on Kelsey Petersons part. I agree with some of the folks that mentioned she probably did this due to how her life has been but it was wrong and of course the legal course will decide punishment etc.
Someone talked about illegal immigration. I for one, came to the US legally, and little do most Americans know, but immigrants who come to work on visas sush as H1B, L1, etc pay taxes and they, in turn do not get retirement, or social security if they stay here till the visa expires. In other words, the money is yours to keep to fund your retirment plans which is set to run out as well thanks to your Federal Govt as well.
I do not intend on hijacking the conversation but thought this’d be the right place for some “educated” posts in the future.
I love living here, and do not have a problem with not receiving social security cuz I probably wont be here when I retire but “everyone” here that emmigrated is not using up your tax dollars but in turn is contributing to your retired life.

That kid totally used the teacher. Its obvious he wore the pants in the relationship. 13 years old, whatever, you should see the sort of shit a troubled person like himself could get into. Parents are non existent - clearly don’t give a fcuk about anything. He lives in a home for high-risk kids. Eventually word gets around he’s run off with the teacher and the family jumps in hoping to get something out of it. Don’t even try to act like they gave a shit until greed caught up with them.
There are very legitimate cases of female teachers abusing young male students - this is not one of them. Her mistake was having ANYTHING to do with trash like that.
