Google Mobile Phone News – Google has released the “G-Phone” or rather their universal platform for the Google mobile phone of the future, code named Android.

The new Google mobile phone pictured below is bound to be a hot seller because it’s open source Linux operating system – code named Android – used to build the “Google phone” architecture is supplemented with Java, a powerful computer programming language that runs “scripts,” or mini programs.

“Today’s announcement is more ambitious than any single ‘Google Phone’ that the press has been speculating about,” Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said in a statement. “Our vision is that the powerful platform we’re unveiling will power thousands of different phone models.”

“The platform is every piece of software you need to build a cell phone,” added Andy Rubin, Google’s director of mobile platforms.

Andy Rubin and The Android team talk about the Google mobile phone development platform.
The approach has already been endorsed by 33 companies who make up the new Open Handset Alliance, including some of the world’s largest wireless carriers and cell-phone manufacturers.

Rubin said new phones built around the software will be available in the second half of 2008 from the four major manufacturers in the alliance: Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC.

Rubin also said eight carriers have agreed to ship handsets based on the Google platform:

  • Sprint and T-Mobile U.S.A. in the United States
  • NTT DoCoMo and KDDI in Japan
  • T-Mobile in 10 European countries and the UK
  • China Mobile
  • Telefonica in Spain
  • Telecom Italia.

Google’s Andy Rubin said major chip makers in the alliance – Intel, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Texas Instruments, Marvell, Nvidia and SiRF Technology Holdings – will open up the specifications of their technology to developers for “Android,” as the Google platform is called. The name “Android” comes from a company that Rubin founded and Google subsequently acquired.

In addition, companies like Nuance Communications, which has a speech-recognition engine; PacketVideo, which developed software for handling video on cell phones; and Ascender, which has custom fonts, are releasing the code for their products under open-source licenses.

Rubin said the intent is to bring Internet-style development to cell phones, which have traditionally required engineers to design programs for at least five major operating systems and to tweak them for hundreds of different cell phone models.

To ensure support for corporate developers, Rubin said Google has signed up alliance members like Wind River of Alameda, which already helps companies like Motorola, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung and Nortel develop and run software embedded in different devices.

Finally, there are tools for individual developers. On Nov. 12, Google will release a free software development kit that will help programmers write applications for it’s mobile phone platform. (Source: San Jose Mercury News)
