Laurie Drew, pictured below and aka Lori Drew, admitted to police that she created a fake MySpace profile used to torment 13-year old Megan Meier into commiting suicide.
Outraged bloggers posted Laurie Drew’s personal information on Rotten Neighbor and here at HitsUSA after conventional news media refused to name the adult behind the fake MySpace profile of “Josh Evans” that pushed impressionable Megan Meier over the edge.

Here’s an excerpt of the police report filed by Lori Drew against Megan’s parents after they found out she was behind the hoax profile that drove their daughter to commit suicide:
“In the months leading up to the Meier’s daughter’s suicide, she instigated and monitored a MySpace account which was created for the sole purpose of communicating with the Meier’s daughter.”
Further, Drew insisted on contacting the Meier family to “inform them of what she knows.” Drew stated she “just needed” to tell them to relieve herself of the “responsibility” and apparent guilt.
Why a supposed “adult” like Laurie thought it was OK to pretend to be a 16-year old boy who liked 13-year old Megan, toyed with her hopes and dreams, and then suddenly turned on her with a vicious, malicious attack is beyond comprehension…
And that’s the latest news on the reprehensible and remorseless Laurie Drew.

That an “adult” could find the time, with all that is going on with children in the world today, to actually torment one via a forum that could just as well have been used to torment her own child, is unfathomable. The naming of Lori Drew has sparked quite a debate indeed. Some major news outlets have chosen to name the perpetrator(s) behind this story such as the New York Times. Some have chosen not to. The mainstream media however has concluded that the blogging community should shoulder the responsibility of first naming the perpetrator behind this story.
The first question I have in this debate is simple. What is new here? Since before the French Revolution, the media has been used to ‘out’ individuals who’s actions seem to bear public relevancy in some way.
Although Lori Drew has not yet been charged in the case of Megan Meier, the media has never required formal charges to be made before running a story. In the case of some journalist like Dan Rather, some media outlets run with stories before even confirming that they’re true.
In this particular case, media outlets that have chosen to withhold Lori Drew’s identity have done so in consideration of other Drew family members.
I’m wondering if by doing this, the media plans to always withhold the names of interesting persons who outrage the community, if those persons have children. This would certainly be quite a ground-breaking event
Right at this moment, there is a story of a cop who is under investigation in the strange death of one wife and the disappearance of another. The cop in the story has a family, yet the media huddles outside his home relentlessly.
I could go back and list thousands of stories where the media wasted no time in delivering the names and occupations of individuals that were later cleared of any wrong-doing. I’ve never heard of another instance where the media apologized for naming names.
Don Henley’s ‘Dirty Laundry’ certainly applies well to conduct of most major news outlets.
Lori Drew is a primary subject of the story, she is not a rape victim, and is not a minor. Identifying her breaks no new ground, nor does it deviate from what news outlets do on a daily basis.
I also remind readers that her name and her role in the Megan Meier tragedy were documented as public record. A public record that Lori filed on her own accord. This is a critically important fact in this debate.
News outlets, bloggers and the general public were handed Lori’s name and Lori’s own self admissions when she herself filed that police report and sought to elevate the entire situation into the public domain.
Had Lori Drew simply acknowledged what she did was wrong, and apologized – the police report that identified her may have never been filed, and the entire situation may have well been kept at the lowest profile.
Will we see the media write about this? Not likely.

On Wednesday, October 21st, city officials wasted no time enacting an ordinance designed to address the public outcry for justice in the Megan Meier tragedy. The six member Board of Aldermen made Internet harassment a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a $500 fine and 90 days in jail.
Does this new law provide any justice for Megan? Does this law provide equitable relief for a future victim?
The Vice rejects the premise of this new law and believes it completely misses the mark. Classifying this case as a harassment issue completely fails to address the most serious aspects of the methods Lori Drew employed to lead this youth to her demise. The Vice disagrees that harassment was even a factor in this case until just a couple of days before Megan’s death.
Considering this case a harassment issue is incorrect because during the 5 weeks Lori Drew baited and groomed her victim, the attention was NOT unwanted attention. Megan participated in the conversations willingly because she was misled, lured, manipulated and exploited without her knowledge.
This law willfully sets a precedent that future child exploiters and predators might use to reclassify their cases as harassment cases. In effect, the law enacted to give Megan justice, may make her even more vulnerable. So long as the child victim doesn’t tell the predator to stop, even a harassment charge may not stick with the right circumstances and a good defender.
Every aspect of this case follows the same procedural requirement used to convict a Child Predator. A child was manipulated by an adult. A child was engaged in sexually explicit conversation (as acknowledged by Lori Drew herself). An adult imposed her will on a child by misleading her, using a profile designed to sexually or intimately attract the 13 year old Megan.
Lori then utilized the power she had gained over this child to cause significant distress and endangerment to that child. She even stipulated to many of these activities in the police report she filed shortly after Megan’s death.
City officials who continue to ignore this viable, documented admission and continue to address this issue as harassment are intentionally burying their heads in the sand, when the solution is staring them right in the face. Why?
There are several other child exploitation laws on the books. To date, none of them have even been considered by City, State and Federal officials in this case. The Vice is outraged that a motion was never even filed, so that the case could at least be argued before a judge or jury.

Everyone is so uptight about Lori’s actions. And well we should be. But did anyone also think about the fact that the girl must have had other reasons for killing herself. One situation doesn’t lead to suicide. It’s a series of things that leads up to it. And it also requires the intervention of the parents. Why didn’t the parents see that they had a potentially suicidal daughter? If parents are really paying attention to their kids, they’d notice when things just don’t seem normal. The time between birth and the time they leave the home as adults is kids’ time. But so many parents are too busy about their own things to worry about their kids. Yes, we should be angry at the mean trick pulled by Lori. But we should also look at the psychological miss firing in the girl. Let’s all get real, huh!

Second, From what has been disclosed, this poor child had already been diagnosed and treated for depression. Since Lori Drew knew this, then this would make her an opportunistic parasite. “To catch a Predator” on NBC shows men looking to have sex with minors. They’re confronted, and on their way out the door, are arrested. A major level of humility is displayed, so I wonder why they same thing doesn’t happen to Lori. She “pretended” to be a “young” boy under the age of eighteen, and was looking to somehow prove a point (harm) to the young lady. There’s also notice of Internet bullies among teenagers and looking to make it a law against that.

I just want to say that Laurie Drew will get what she deserves one day. As a mother of a 16 year old, I would hate for someone did that to my child. I am absolutely disgusted with this woman. There must be something terribly wrong with her to do this to a child. I feel very bad for her daughter, what an example, and now this girl might grow up to be just like mom, or she will likely be labeled even if she is a good kid. Lori Drew – Trial Update
A Missouri woman knew her 13-year-old neighbor was depressed and suicidal when she sent cruel Internet messages to the teenager, her former assistant testified. The girl killed herself after being told the world would be better off without her.
Ashley Grills, 20, told jurors Thursday she helped Lori Drew set up a fake MySpace profile of a 16-year-old boy to lure Megan Meier into an online relationship. Testifying for the prosecution under a grant of immunity, Grills also said she sent the last message from the fictitious “Josh Evans” to Megan in October 2006 on the day the girl hanged herself.
When she learned of Megan’s death, Grills said Drew told her, “`We could have pushed her overboard because she was suicidal and depressed.’”
Testimony was to resume Friday in the case against Drew, who has pleaded not guilty to one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing computers without authorization. Each count carries a potential sentence of five years in prison.
Prosecutors say Drew, 49, her then-13-year-old daughter, Sarah, and Grills created the MySpace alias in September 2006 to befriend Megan to find out if she was spreading rumors about Sarah.
The case is believed to be the nation’s first cyberbullying trial. Its results could set a legal precedent for dealing with the issue of online harassment.
Defense attorney Dean Steward told jurors that Drew did not violate the Computer Use and Fraud Act — used in the past to address computer hacking — and reminded them that she was not facing charges dealing with the suicide. Steward has repeatedly asked U.S. District Judge George Wu to exclude testimony about Megan’s suicide and twice sought a mistrial.
Grills, who helped Drew with her coupon magazine business, testified that she told Drew they might get in trouble for the scheme, but that Drew replied, “It was fine and people do it all the time.”
Grills said Drew thought the MySpace account was a funny idea and was present about half of the time when Grills and Sarah sent messages to Megan.
Grills said she remembered at least one time when Drew sat down and typed messages on the computer. She also testified that Drew wanted to print the conversations between “Josh” and Megan, lure the teen to a mall and reveal who the fake boy really was.
To finally end the hoax, Grills said she devised a scenario in which “Josh” would move away so Megan would lose interest in him. When Megan persisted, the tactics changed.
“We decided to be mean to her so she would leave him alone,” Grills said.
She testified that she sent the final message to Megan saying the world would be better off without her. Prosecutors did not ask if Drew was in the room when that message was sent, but Grills said she believed the message contributed to her death.
Grills said that a short time after finding out that Megan committed suicide, Drew and her husband ordered her to close the MySpace account.

Sarah Drew, 16, said her mother, Lori Drew, initially thought it was a good idea to create a fictitious boy on a MySpace account to find out if Megan Meier was spreading rumors about Sarah.
But Sarah said her mother told a business assistant to shut down the MySpace account two weeks after it was created — well before the final message was sent saying the world would be better off if Megan was dead.
Megan, who had been treated for attention deficit disorder and depression, hanged herself in October 2006 after receiving the message.
Lori Drew has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and accessing computers without authorization. If convicted of all counts, Drew faces up to 20 years in prison.
Sarah’s testimony capped a week of emotional and sometimes touchy proceedings in what is believed to be the nation’s first cyber-bullying trial.
Sarah broke down under cross-examination by U.S. Attorney Thomas O’Brien as she described how Megan had confided in her about her suicidal thoughts, but Sarah didn’t tell anyone.
The trial also took another twist when U.S. District Judge George Wu said he will rule Monday on a defense motion calling for the dismissal of charges against the 49-year-old Drew.
Prosecutors say Drew, her business assistant Ashley Grills and Sarah created the MySpace alias of a teen boy called “Josh Evans” in September 2006 to befriend Megan.
Sarah told jurors her mother thought inventing “Josh” was a good idea but changed her mind two weeks later and told Grills to shut it down. Sarah also said she tried to stop Grills from sending the final message.
“I was like, Ashley, no, don’t send it,” Sarah said. “She said she sent it and laughed about it.”
Sarah testified she never saw her mother use the MySpace account. Her statement contradicted testimony by Grills that she had seen Drew type at least one message and court documents alleging Drew told authorities she typed, read and monitored the chat between “Josh” and Megan.
Sarah said it was her father, not her mother, who told her and Grills to delete the MySpace account after they learned Megan had hanged herself. Grills testified Thursday it was both Sarah’s parents who made the request.
On cross-examination by the prosecution, Sarah said she often forgave Megan, who she considered her best friend, for saying mean things about her. She also denied having a role in her friend’s death.
Sarah said Megan confided in her on two occasions that she wanted to kill herself.
“She was like, I don’t know if I could live anymore,” she said of one instance. “I told her not to do it.”
Sarah cried on the witness stand and nodded when O’Brien questioned her about why she didn’t tell any adults about the suicide conversations.
Defense attorney Dean Steward stood up and lashed out at the region’s top federal prosecutor for badgering the teenage girl.
“Come on, ‘yes or no,’ not a head nod. Be a professional!” Steward bellowed. Drew shot icy stares at O’Brien but showed no other reaction.
Sarah was visibly shaken as she left the courtroom and wept as she passed Megan’s parents Ron and Tina Meier. Outside court, Drew tried to calm her daughter.
Steward said his client would not testify at the trial.
Judge Wu said he intends to review testimony and issue a ruling on the dismissal motion by the defense claiming Drew cannot be held responsible for violating the service rules of the MySpace social networking site because she never read them.
While making the dismissal motion, Steward argued that neither Drew nor Sarah or Grills had read the rules.
“The best view of the government’s evidence is ambiguous at best,” Steward said.
That prompted Wu to question Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Krause about the charges in the ongoing trial.
“How would they know if they didn’t read the terms of service?” Wu asked.
Krause said Grills had testified that she knew they could get in trouble for the hoax, and that a computer forensics analysis showed a MySpace account had been deleted from Drew’s computer after the suicide of Megan.

There seems to be a few missing elements that no one seems to be talking about in the media in regards to the Laurie Drew case. It’s a very sad and tragic that a young girl has taken her life, but my question is why was a 13 year old girl allowed to roam the internet unattended and what about the responsibility of the parent? Letting your child roam the internet without supervision is like letting your child wonder the streets of any major American city alone. You wouldn’t let your child walk the streets of downtown Detroit by themselves and talk to any stranger that happened by. Letting your child surf the internet without keeping a watchful eye is pretty much the same thing.
We all no what Laurie Drew did here was an outrage and morally wrong. She is being held accountable for her actions and rightly so. I agree with the zealots, she can “burn in hell” for all I care. As for the MySpace policies that she broke it is quite obvious that she did so. It is stated clearly in their policy and I quote, ‘that by using the MySpace Services, you represent and warrant that (a) all registration information you submit is truthful and accurate; (b) you will maintain the accuracy of such information.’ It is also obvious that another policy was violated, one that is stated in the same paragraph under eligibility, quoted ‘(c) you are 14 years of age or older.’
It seems to me to be a two way street here and the side of the street that no one wants to look at, due to the tragically emotional implications, is the side of parental responsibility.

It’s very sad when an adult has not the intelligence nor temperament to know how impressionable a young 13 year old girl can be. To blame her suicide on “not being strong enough” as some out there have done is to deny reality: Not everyone is strong and not everyone has “great” supportive (e.g., “perfect”) parents.
What Lori Drew did is so vicious, so calculating, so heartless, she needs to stop and SERIOUSLY apologize to Megan’s parents.
Of course, the world would be better off with ANYONE who does not elevate their fellow man (lady/women/girl too) or, at the very least respect their right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I can’t wish ill-will on anyone. From the looks of Drew, it’s obvious she doesn’t exercise, eats lots of junk food and will likely get (and die from) some horrible disease. Of course, I don’t wish ill will on anyone, it’s just an independent , objective observation.

Drew knew, had personal knowledge that Megan was under distress. She knew that this child had problems. Why did she not just leave the kid alone. Megan was 13. 13. Just entering PUBERTY. I can have more empathy towards Drew had she had done this to another ADULT. Like anyone over 18.

Well i am 16 now, i watched this trial of an evil duo, mother and daughter that deserve to NEVER see the light of day. I have never seen such imatureness in people EVER. Megan wasnt stabbed or shot, true, but she was driven to her death intentionally by these so called “women”. That in my book is murder, it takes effort to deliberatley hurt someone, and they have. In my eyes this is a crime that is inhumane. I hope Lori and her daughter go into isolation, or that this nation ignores them and tortures them emotionally, so they wont kill themselves but realize that what goes around comes around. They are guilty of murder in the highest degree, and if i can, I will someday retry this case and see Megans murder put to real justice.

She will be infamous for years to come. Just look at Bruno Hauptmann (Charles Lindbergh Jr. kidnapper and murderer; son of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh), Leopold and Loeb (Nathan Freudenthal Leopold Jr. and Richard Albert Loeb), and Gertrude Baniszewski (got children to torture and kill Sylvia Likens). These happened decades ago and are still talked about today.
Without any argument, she joins other hated figures like Charles Manson, Osama bin Laden, and Adolf Hitler. Granted, Drew did not commit mass murder and start wars.
