In an unusual twist in these teacher predator cases, Christel Gravlin got drunk and went to a basketball game at her high school, where she blabbed to everyone around her that she was having sex with a student and even revealed his name to the other students.
“On November 30, after drinking very heavily at home, I attended a basketball game at Lisbon Central School. I was highly intoxicated but left the game at half-time to have another drink. I remember very few details from that night, but I apparently announced to students sitting around me that I was having an affair with a student. Somehow I also revealed that the student was (name withheld),” Gravlin told police.
The teacher-student affair came to light when the teenager’s mother notified authorities and students at the basketball game passed on their concerns to an officer assigned to crowd control.
According to news reports, the 33-year old Lisbon Central School teacher who is charged with raping one of her students told police she felt the teenager manipulated her into having a relationship with him.
Gravlin stated that one of her students contacted her through AOL Instanting Messaging to discuss his problems.
“As his teacher and someone with compassion, I tried to talk him through his problems. We began talking every night on line and eventually texting on our cell phones. The conversations quickly escalated to a sexual nature. I knew at times that this was wrong, but I didn’t stop talking to him,” she told police in the statement.
Gravlin said the teen told her she was young, beautiful and that he loved her. Then according to Gravlin’s statement, the student suggested they have sex, so she agreed to meet the teen.
Gravlin stated she drove him to her home at 182 Magill Road in Lisbon, New York where they had consensual sex.
“They knew each other from school and then communication really. I guess the whole relationship evolved through the computer on the internet,” said Detective Sgt. Augustus Burns.
Police say that alcohol was not involved in the incident and that there appear to be no other victims.
“We have no information from any other kids that there was anybody else involved in a relationship with Ms. Gravlin,” said Burns.
Police say students overheard an intoxicated Gravlin at a basketball game and brought the subject to their attention, which prompted a further investigation.
“They came to me and they were a little upset with the way it was brought up at the game and how it was disclosed and what was being said about some of the players on the court at the time and some of the other kids that were there,” said Burns.
Christel Gravlin cried in court Monday as she was formally charged with having sexual contact with the 15 year old male student:
- Third-degree criminal sexual act, a felony, for allegedly having oral sex with the student
- Third-degree rape, also a felony, for allegedly having sexual intercourse with the boy
- Endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor
Christel Gravlin, a 10th and 11th grade English teacher, who was accompanied in court by her corrections officer husband, was released under the supervision of the probation department as she is not considered a flight risk at this time.
