17-year old George Hotz has unlocked an iPhone and used it on T-Mobile, not AT&T as Apple forces the rest of us to do. Not only that, George is auctioning off the very first unlocked iPhone on eBay in a historic auction.

In a blow to the vaunted iPhone security, George Hotz from Glen Rock, NJ took only two hours to hack an iPhone with a little software tweak and a soldering iron. This is not something he recommends for the non-technical among us, but he’s published the how-to do it in 10 steps on the his blog.

George Hotz Unlocked iPhone

The historic iPhone was traded for just what George wanted. Here is a quote from George Hotz blog on what he got in trade: “Terry Daidone, the founder of Certicell contacted me this morning, and offered to make a trade for the iPhone. I traded it for a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones. I will be sending the iPhones, unlocked if they wish, to jpetrie(the first donater), gray(the reversing genius), and iProof(who is truly amazing at finding stuff online)  Thanks a lot everyone. I leave for college tomorrow, and this has been a great end to a great summer. If I ever do anything more with the iPhone, it’ll definitely be posted here.”
