California Paparazzi Law – A proposed law in California to control paparazzi is gathering support from celebrities, the Screen Actors Guild, and surprisingly, the paparazzi themselves.

Current California paparazzi law only punishes paparazzi for any assaults and altercations caused by their attempts to photograph celebrities.

Nothing restricts them from the swarming mob behavior that engulfs clebrities like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan every time they set foot in public.

The existing California anti-paparazzi statute was signed into law September 30, 2005 by Governor Schwartzenegger.

Under that anti-paparazzi law, the perpetrator of a paparazzi assault may be liable for up to three times the amount of general and special damages proximately caused by that violation, punitive damages, and disgorgement to the plaintiff of any proceeds or other consideration as a result of the violation.

The anti-paparazzi law also provides that a person who directs, solicits, actually induces, or actually causes another person to commit an assault of this nature can be liable for similar damages.

Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger has said that he supports an even stronger law providing for a “celebrity buffer zone of privacy” to allow celebrities some comfortable distance from intrusive paparazzi.
