Chapel Hill Police Lt. Kevin Gunter said Eve Carson was shot multiple times, at least once in the head, but that police believe the shooting to be a random act at this point in their investigation.

Carson was believed to be on her way to an early morning jog in an exclusive neighborhood in downtown Chapel Hill, NC when she was shot four times at point blank range at approximately 5:00 am Wednesday morning.

Eve’s 2005 Toyota Highlander and purse were stolen in the brutal attack and police had appealed to the public yesterday for help identifying the young victim whose body was found dressed in jogging clothes with no identification.

Eve Carson was discovered lying in the intersection of Hillcrest Road and Hillcrest Circle after the Chapel Hill Police Department responded at about 5 a.m. to reports of gunshots in the exclusive residential area off East Franklin Street near the University of North Carolina campus.

The first call came from a neighbor on Davie Circle, who lived a street behind where the body was found. The caller reported that she heard three or four shots and a woman scream, police spokesman Lt. Kevin Gunter said. Police received two other 911 calls immediately after the first, but no witnesses to the actual shooting have been found.

“We have suffered a tragic loss today, and our community is in shocked grief,” Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy said in a statement. “Eve was a beautiful, caring person who exemplified the best and the brightest.”

Eve was a pre-med major from Athens, Georgia who won the UNC student body presidency with 60% of the vote in March, 2007, campaigning on a slogan of “Efficiency. Vision. Everyone.”

Carson was also a Morehead scholar, a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and was a pre-med major studying both political science and biology who was due to graduate with highest honors in six weeks time.

And that’s the sad news about the carjacking death of UNC student body president Eve Carson.
