Olympic Torch San Francisco - Massive protests marred the Olympic torch relay in San Francisco today as Free Tibet protestors tried to stop the torch as they did in London and Paris.
The Olympic torch San Francisco protest had thousands of Free Tibet supporters demonstrating during the Olympic torch relay against China’s occupation of Tibet.
On Monday, protestors had scaled the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and unfurled a huge banner supporting the Free Tibet protestors who want China out of Tibet because of human rights violations.
As the Olympic torch was carried along San Francisco Bay, it was guarded by thousands of police and a squad of Chinese men clad in blue tracksuits who turned out to be an elite group of Chinese Army commandos.
The elite paramilitary group accompanying the Olympic torch had been roundly criticized in both London and Paris for their rough tactics when dealing with protestors.
Sebastian Coe, the chairman of the London 2012 Games, was quoted by British media as describing the Chinese Olympic torch protection team as ‘thugs.’
Two thousand police accompanied the Olympic torch relay in London and three thousand French police were deployed to protect the torch on its chaotic Paris stop.
San Francisco used a wall of police to prevent protesters from getting too near the Olympic torch and clashes turned violent as Free Tibet supporters struggled to extinguish the torch.
